A talking trash can: Activists raise environmental awareness with a guerilla action

"The city is covered with trash, Skopje and Macedonia are covered with trash. Starting from this fact, we decided to create an interactive trash can that speaks to passers-by and warns them not to throw trash around".

This is the last guerilla action carried out in Skopje by the Urban Art Actions group, which works in conjunction with the Center for Contemporary Arts.

They hope that by admonishing the citizens, as well as the authorities, in this creative and humorous way, they will succeed in raising awareness about communal hygiene and contribute to a cleaner city.

"The bin is made from recycled materials (an old sewer pipe) and it contains electronics with sensors that detect movement and warn people not to throw rubbish around, and when someone throws rubbish the bin says thank you and tells its story about the rubbish in the city. In its story, the bin offers the citizens the opportunity to talk with it and hear the reasons why the city is dirty, but also to hear the problems faced by the majority of garbage cans", the activists explain.

In the next period, as they announced, the bin will be placed in the center of Skopje, and from next week, they say, citizens will be able to meet and talk with the bin in different locations.
