Skopje, August 16 — A record temperature of 42.7°C for this summer was recorded at 17:00 in Skopje at the weather station in Petrovec, the National Hydrometeorological Service's announced yesterday. The temperature record in Skopje was set in July 2007 - 43.4°C.
Such a temperature in August, as measured yesterday, is categorized as dangerous and close to catastrophic.
At the same time, temperatures of 41°C were recorded in Veles and Vinica, while 40°C was observed in Shtip, Kavadarci, Demir Kapija, and at the Zajchev Rid weather station in Skopje.
Due to the heatwave, the government implemented emergency measures from Monday to Wednesday and decided to extend these measures through Thursday.
The measures, among other things, include exempting the most vulnerable groups of the population from work obligations, and reorganization of work activities for construction workers and those who work outdoors.
The National Hydrometeorological Service announced that today in Skopje will be sunny and warm, with moderate development of unstable clouds in the afternoon. The minimum temperature will drop to 19°C and the maximum temperature will reach 39°C.
In the following days, there will be local instability in the afternoon and evening hours with short showers, thunderstorms and conditions for short-term thunderstorms.
Over the weekend and at the beginning of the following week, instability will occur in several places. This will manifest locally as severe weather, including intense rain showers, thunderstorms, strong winds, and hail. Daily temperatures will gradually decrease.
